Gamma GT (GGT) Test

A sensitive liver enzyme test that helps detect bile duct problems, alcohol-related liver strain and medication effects.

Gamma GT is a sensitive liver enzyme that helps pinpoint bile duct problems, alcohol-related strain and medication effects, adding valuable detail to liver assessment.

About the Gamma GT (GGT) Test

The GGT test measures an enzyme found mainly in the liver and bile ducts. It is particularly useful for identifying obstruction or disease of the bile ducts and is a sensitive indicator of alcohol-related liver strain. GGT is often measured alongside a full Liver Function Test to help clarify the origin of abnormal results and to monitor the liver over time.

Preparation and turnaround

A quick venous blood sample is taken, and avoiding alcohol for around 24 hours before testing is advisable for an accurate result. No fasting is generally required. Results are usually available within one working day and are best interpreted by a doctor together with your other liver markers.

Frequently asked questions

What does a raised GGT mean?

Elevated GGT can indicate bile duct problems, alcohol-related liver strain or medication effects. It is usually interpreted alongside other liver enzymes.

Should I avoid alcohol before the test?

Yes. Avoiding alcohol for around 24 hours beforehand is advisable, as recent intake can raise GGT levels.

Is GGT tested with other liver enzymes?

Often, yes. GGT is commonly measured alongside a full Liver Function Test to give a clearer picture of liver health.

Some tests require fasting. We'll confirm any preparation (such as fasting for 8–10 hours) when we confirm your appointment. When in doubt, ask us at booking.
