Measures a B vitamin essential for healthy blood and, crucially, for pregnancy and early foetal development.

Folate is a B vitamin essential for healthy red blood cells and, crucially, for pregnancy and early foetal development, making this a valuable test at key life stages.

About the Folate Test

This test measures the level of folate (vitamin B9) in your blood. Folate is needed to produce healthy red blood cells, and deficiency can cause a form of anaemia with symptoms such as fatigue and weakness. It is particularly important before and during pregnancy, when adequate folate helps protect against neural tube defects in the developing baby.

Preparation and turnaround

A simple venous blood sample is taken with no fasting generally required, though a morning sample is sometimes preferred. Results are usually available within one to two working days. If your level is low, your doctor can recommend dietary changes or supplements, especially relevant if you are planning pregnancy.
